Family-Owned Photography in Howard County, MD: Over 15 Years Capturing Love and Life's Milestones

Capturing the precious early moments of your newborn is a wonderful experience. To ensure a smooth and successful in-home newborn photography session, there are several steps you can take to prepare both before and after your baby arrives. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you get ready and make the most of your newborn photo session.

Preparing for Your In-Home Newborn Photography Session:

A Guide by a Professional Newborn Photographer

It’s essential to schedule your newborn photography session during your second trimester to ensure availability. Popular photographers can be fully booked months in advance. Additionally, take the time to look at different photographers’ portfolios, read reviews, and talk to other parents. Ensuring the photographer’s style matches your vision and that they have experience with newborns will set the stage for a successful session.

Before Birth

Once your baby is born, contact your photographer as soon as possible to set a specific session date. Newborn sessions are best within the first two weeks when babies are sleepiest and most malleable. Decide on any outfits or props you’d like to use and discuss these with your photographer in advance. This ensures the session is personalized and that you have everything ready.

After Birth, Before the Session

To help ensure your baby is sleepy and cooperative during the session, interact with them to keep them awake for at least an hour beforehand. Giving your baby a full feeding 20-30 minutes before the session and ensuring they are well burped will help keep them content. Loosen your baby’s diaper and any tight clothing about 30 minutes before the session to prevent red marks on their skin that could show up in photos. Additionally, make sure the room is warm and have any special props, outfits, or items ready. A warm environment keeps the baby comfortable, and having everything ready minimizes disruptions.

Right Before the Session

During the Session

Staying relaxed during the session is crucial. Babies can sense your stress, which can make them unsettled. Trust your photographer to guide the session, as they have experience handling newborns and will know how to soothe and position your baby for the best photos. Dress in solid colors and avoid patterns to ensure that the focus stays on the baby and you feel at ease. Have extra diapers, wipes, a pacifier, blankets, and any personal props or outfits handy. Being prepared for any situation helps the session run smoothly. If your baby becomes fussy or uncooperative, it’s perfectly fine to take breaks. Experienced photographers expect this and are skilled in soothing newborns. The most important thing is for parents to stay calm and not get frustrated. Taking a few moments to calm yourself with deep breaths can help maintain a peaceful environment, which is beneficial for both you and your baby.

Flexibility and Professionalism

Newborns are often unpredictable, and it’s okay if things don’t go exactly as planned. As an experienced photographer, I am accustomed to handling various situations and will still be able to capture beautiful images. Choosing a photographer who is not only experienced but also easy to work with and whose style you love ensures a more relaxed and enjoyable session, even if there are a few bumps along the way.
